Course Materials Reflection

(Instructions) Reflect on this week’s reading assignments and videos. What is an important insight that you learned from Dr Harper in the video on “CQ Strategy and Action in Communication?” How can you apply that insight to your interactions this week? Write a narrative of at least 200 words in the white box below.

  • Well, firstly I do not mean to sound like I am dampening and/or devaluing the optimism in the lecture from Dr. Harper’s video as that is not at all what I am doing in what I am attempting to discuss. I am merely reflecting on the observations in retrospect based upon my personal experience with CQ Strategy and the potential causalities that can be observed when doing so whether it be a good or bad outcome.

  • With that said, I was pondering on how a lot of this cultural strategy needs to be conducted at a healthy pace as well. I can foresee this possibly developing into some form of anxiety prone situations as I have had in the past. Of course, this all depends on your experience, personality, biology, environment, etc. I do not really have this problem much more as I have learned to handle certain social/cultural engagements when involved in many social settings. I believe I have used a form of cultural strategy in the past with my own cultural upbringing considered. In a way, it can almost resemble the skill of “acting” or tailoring your behavior, conduct, and social interactions in the best interest of having a quality cultural or social engagement. However, too much precognitive planning can render significant anxiety and misinformed preconceived strategizing in the attempt of doing so. In simpler terms, I supposed one could identify this as “overthinking.” This can lead someone to mistake your anxiety and communication as either rudeness, shallow-concern, carelessness, low-comprehension levels, and among many other things.

  • How I try to execute my best attempts with CQ Strategy and Action in Communication is similar to how I try to mindfully conduct social engagements that I personally dub for myself as a “literature led lifestyle.” Bearing this in mind and my personal relationship I have with classic literature, it has allowed me to better approach both cultural and social interactions in a more balanced or neutral mindset without much interference for bias or predetermined impetuous emotion that could potentially cloud my judgement in the process of my communication. This is why I have come to love writing so much and I rather use literary communication for allotting the best representation of myself. I can better barricade my selfish inflicted emotions to better communicate and understand what I need to in the event for attaining sound altercations. I understand that not all good communication can be exclusively employed through the use of literary communication as some things are better understood through action, verbal communication, facial expression, and gestures. In addition, everyone has their unique “style” or sense of communicating with all things considered for CQ Strategy. I use this personal strategy of literary insight every day as often as my capacity for thought will allow it.

    CQ Research

(Instructions) In Chapter 4 of Leading with Cultural Intelligence, David Livermore describes multiple cultural systems. Do some research on the same culture you researched in Module 2 to describe the Artistic System (Is it clear or fluid?) and the Family System (is it kinship or nuclear?). What evidence shows this cultural system? How does this cultural system work in this country? What behaviors, values, and beliefs make up this cultural system? For each cultural system, write at least 100 words. Include a citation from the course materials and at least one citation from an outside source.

  • Artistic System (Clear or Fluid):

    • What I can observe from the Filipino culture is their form of governmental structure is very similar to that of America. There is a lot of American influence that has impressed itself upon the country over many recent decades. According to the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco, the Philippines is “a constitutional republic with a presidential form of government where the power is equally separated by three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial (The Government). However, the “heart” of the country compliments both its traditional and aesthetic value through their soulful artistic portrayal.

    • I can personally reference that they have much of an American and Korean influence when it comes to art, music, entertainment, pop culture. Filipinos love to sing and very much enjoy karaoke. They are much into K-pop (aka Korean pop) and K-dramas. Often, you can observe that they have a noticeable social influence that can find its way back to some impression of romanticism. However, they are rooted in their values and do not openly engage in public displays of affection as this can be quite a surprise. They are respectful, yet intimate kind of people as much as they are modest and proper yet appear to be compassionate by nature.

    • Much of my reference has been on a first-hand basis as I practically keep in communication almost every day with friends from the Philippines and have been accustomed to the culture for many years now. I would suggest that the culture is more fluid than they are solid when considering their

      environmental aesthetics.

  • Family System (Kinship or Nuclear):

  • Kinship can be well-observed to be prevalent among Filipino families. Their rooted traditional culture focuses a lot on family, to say the least. You can find many families that hold a kinship from at least three generations but sometimes up to four within a household (“Community’s Role in Traditional Filipino Family Life”). They have much respect and dedication to making sure their deceased loved ones receive a proper funeral and burial. Instead of celebrating Halloween like we do in America, every year they use this time for honoring their deceased loved ones and paying respects to their burial sites (“Filipino Traditions and Practices on All Souls’ Day”).

Grand Narrative Summary

(Instructions) Throughout the course, we will use the grand narrative of scripture as the content we communicate across cultures. Please write a summary of Act 3 and Act 4 of the Grand Narrative. Use your textbook and the course videos to summarize the story. Write at least 100 words for each act. Please include at least 2 scripture references and an in-text citation referencing either the course textbook entitled The True Story of The Whole World or the course videos entitled Communicating the Grand Narrative.

Act 3 | The King Chooses Israel:

I would firstly like to make the obvious denotation that some could find humorous correlating our cultural studies with the Grand Scripture. I immediately thought, “oh these biblical families are quite adept in their kinship” as can be noted in Genesis chapter 5 (The Scofield Study Bible, KJV). The exhaustive lineage from Noah can also be observed in the same amusing manner starting at chapter 10 of Genesis (The Scofield Study Bible, KJV).

Our world needed a people to live by— an example made by God. As outlined in Act 3, this example of a chosen people would be that of Israel. This can be assimilated to our Savior, Jesus Christ as sinful humanity was given redemption by the blood of Christ for our world to follow and lead ourselves likewise by this example of love, mercy, and redemption. This story leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion is better know as “the Gospel” which can be found in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John of the New Testament (The Scofield Study Bible, KJV).

However, we can see that even God’s chosen people of Israel took upon their own sinful ways to allow the worship of other idols despite their devotion to God (Goheen and Bartholomew 89). Such can be akin to Jesus’ own people that mocked, scoffed, and denied him and his ways. In Act 3 “The King Chooses Israel,” can be seen as a mirror reflection with the story of Jesus between the Old and New Testaments by many of the examples and stories when carefully compared.

Act 4 | The Coming of the King:

Such as is read in the Old Testament of how God exacts His authority over creation, and His Kingdom can also be revealed and correlated through the mighty works of Jesus and the Kingdom to come (Goheen and Bartholomew 110). God demonstrates His magnificence by imprinting divine authorship through creation that is interwoven in our reality. God created light and darkness in the first day (Gen. 1:3); the firmament on the second (Gen. 1:7); the land seas and vegetation on the third (Gen. 1:9). On the fourth day, God created the sun, moon, and stars to providing light to the firmament (Gen. 1:16); the fifth day the birds and creature of the sea (Gen. 1:20); and on the sixth day He created land dwelling animals and humanity (Gen.1:26). And of course, the seventh day God rests; and he blesses and sanctifies this holy day.

If we (humans) are this far out of reach with trying to obtain answer for where and how things came to be, including our existence to be, then this universe far out matches our futile and worldly thinking for even attempting to strike the first thought of developing an answer by our own understanding to interpret God’s Kingdom. How silly must we be? How ignorant must we be to continue this insanity for Man’s pursuit of self-justifying our own existence if it be this difficult to fathom— this only leaves one other possible answer— the ONLY answer there ever could be. We die in vain if not for the redemption of man and the inclusivity of relationship with our master and His Kingdom to come.

God sent Jesus— a remarkable act of love and mercy to bring Himself to our level in the form of a human so that we could have relationship with Him and be given a gift a salvation that we did not deserve. He has manifested His kingdom by doing so twofold— His magnificent works of creation (Goheen and Bartholomew) and through His Son, the Gospel of Jesus’ and His resurrection (Goheen and Bartholomew 132).
